Brazil was an absolutely amazing experience. I participated in a Let's Start Talking summer mission trip for six weeks during the summer of 2007. The aim of our mission was to develop personal relationships with our readers. Our classes initially where to better develop our students conversational English skills. Our textbook consisted of clips from the Book of Luke from the Bible. In the classroom it was a one-on-one setup. Meaning one teacher (myself or one of the other four members of my team) and the student. Each class the reader/student/friend read from the textbook and answered questions that corresponded with that days lesson. It varied each day on how many lessons we completed. Sometimes we would have one lesson and just talk about our daily lives. Or sometimes we would do five lessons and talk only a little.
Every week we would host a party with our readers and people from the church. This helped create a tie with our students to the local church. (You see how the mission was setup now?)
I would love to speak more about our trip. If you are interested, just let me know. I will post photos of one of my class sessions and a few of the parties we had with our students.
